A recent article by The Wall Street Journal discussed WeWork’s court filing that the co-working-space-provider owes no “stub rent” (the unpaid post-bankruptcy portion of November 2023 rent) to 160 landlords. After weeks of negotiating with attorneys for landlords and the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors over procedures for landlords to assert stub rent claims, WeWork then asserted, in a court filing last week, that no stub rent was owed for the vast majority of its locations in the United States. Ivan Gold shared that the company’s stance came as a surprise that will necessitate further discussions regarding the legal or factual basis for WeWork’s position.
