Scott, a partner in our Los Angeles and Century City offices and Chair of the Litigation practice, has substantial experience handling complex real estate, finance, insurance, entertainment, and commercial disputes in state and federal courts. He is a go-to lawyer for some of the most hotly contested and difficult litigation matters. As head of the firm’s Telecommunications Infrastructure group, Scott also frequently litigates complex telecom cases for the world’s largest international wireless carriers and tower companies.
His commercial litigation experience includes prosecuting and defending complex real estate disputes on behalf of commercial and residential developers; representing major telecommunications companies in regard to network real estate disputes; representing financial institutions, mortgage companies and real estate businesses in a wide range of real estate and consumer finance disputes; handling complex entertainment industry disputes; handling complex franchise matters on behalf of substantial franchisors and franchisees; prosecuting and defending various commercial and real estate contract disputes; and handling complex insurance disputes.
Scott has substantial first-chair trial experience representing clients in complex jury trials, court trials, and arbitrations. The beacon of his practice is the art of trying cases to juries and he has done so year after year with a proven record of success. As a seasoned trial lawyer, Scott is passionate about representing clients in important litigation matters and thrives at achieving great results for those clients both inside and outside of the courtroom. Scott adorns his Century City office with at least one trial board from every one of his trials over the years, a collage of timelines, important contract provisions, emails, and photos. To this day, Scott stays in contact with many of his jurors from his cases over the years. A motto he stands by is that "the connection a trial lawyer should make during a trial should be strong enough to last for years." Scott considers the pleasure of training the firm's associates on what he calls "the lost art of jury trials," and life-long bonds he forms with clients he goes to battle is the reason he loves what he does.
In the face of the pandemic, Scott and his trial team prevailed in a case of first impression over his client’s right to terminate a PSA and recover a non-refundable deposit following COVID-19 disruptions. In 2019, Scott successfully led a team of Allen Matkins trial attorneys in defending an electronic device manufacturer client facing a lawsuit of nearly $200 million, earning it a spot on the Daily Journal's "Top Defense Verdicts" in 2019. The client is a manufacturer of printer components used around the globe for point-of-sale and other devices that was sued by a company that manufactures and sells a touch screen tablet device used on tabletops in thousands of national and international restaurant chains to order menu items and print receipts. The plaintiff sought damages of nearly $200 million based on its contentions that the printers supplied by the client were defective and that the client defrauded the plaintiff in various ways. The client stood by the quality of its product and overwhelmingly prevailed after a two-week jury trial, ending a highly contentious four-year legal battle.
