Martin is a partner in the San Diego office with a focus on life sciences. Martin has represented a variety of landlords and tenants in the development and leasing of life science projects. Martin has successfully completed major leasing transactions totaling more than 40 million square feet in California, the Midwest and East Coast over the past 25 years, representing some of the nation's leading real estate and end user companies. Martin also represents a wide variety of clients in the acquisition, disposition, development, financing, and ground leasing of shopping centers, industrial projects, office buildings, and other commercial and mixed-use projects throughout the country.

  • Phase 3 Properties. Represents this life science developer in all of its biotechnology projects in San Diego (5510, 5580, 5590, 5530, 5550 Morehouse Drive, 1155 Island Drive, 4000 Shoreline and Campus Point), Boston (5 Channel Center, 21 Hickory, 250 Arsenal, 1560 Trapelo, 900 Middlesex and 12 Farnsworth) and the Bay Area (Genesis Marina at 3000, Genesis Marina at 3500, Genesis 1900 Alameda, DC Station and 1000 Marina) including leases with the following tenants:

  • Breakthrough Properties. San Diego projects (Torrey View and Pacific View) and its Boston project (Enterprise Resource Center (Harvard)).  This client was formed under a joint venture with Tishman Speyer (a long-time client of the firm) and Bellco Capital.  Recent transactions include Becton Dickinson (full building Lease) and Janux Therapeutics.
  • IQHQ. 1.7 million square foot life science project in downtown San Diego.
  • Hines. Levit Green project in Houston. This 52-acre mixed-use life science project will consist of nine buildings comprising more than four million square feet.
  • Oxford Properties. West Coast counsel for Oxford’s life science portfolio (initial projects include Boren Lofts (Seattle), Foundry 31 (Emeryville) and Torrey Pines Business Park (San Diego)).
  • Steelwave/Walton Street Joint Venture. Three-building life science project in San Diego (Torrey Ridge Science Center).  Current representation includes theLab at Berkeley and theLab at Emeryville.
  • Kilroy Realty Corporation. Land acquisition, development and now leasing of a 15-building biotechnology project known as Oyster Point in South San Francisco. Martin handled the first lease at this project (Cytokinetics (full building lease)).
  • Healthpeak. More than 1,500 leases in San Diego and the Bay Area for various tenants.
  • Illumina, Inc. Illumina is the world's largest developer and manufacturer of integrated systems for analyzing genetic variations. Martin represented (and continues to represent) Illumina in all U.S. and Canada-based real estate transactions including the following:
        • 945,000 rsf headquarters/lab lease in San Diego, CA (ARE is the developer)
        • 360,000 rsf office/lab campus lease in San Diego, CA (BMR is the developer)
        • 330,000 rsf campus lease in Foster City, CA (BMR is the developer)
        • 144,000 rsf campus in Madison, WI (ARE is the developer)
        • 98,000 rsf campus lease in San Francisco (ARE is the developer)
        • 290,000 rsf campus lease in San Diego (BMR is the developer)
        • 24,000 rsf lease in Victoria, BC (JAWL is the developer)
        • 45,000 rsf lease in Redwood City, CA (HCP is the landlord)
        • 109,000 rsf lease in Hayward, CA (MEPT is the landlord)
  • The Muller Company. Various San Diego lab leases, including Gene Therapy Systems, Inc., Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc., West Health Institute, West Health Incubator, Inc., and Auspex Pharmaceuticals.
  • Element Bio. Outside real estate counsel for this tenant, and most recent project was a 210,000 rsf life science lease in San Diego against ARE
  • Ventas Reit. One Tower and Two Tower Genesis project in the Bay Area (and formerly represented Phase 3 in the initial lease-up of this 715,000 rsf life science project).
  • Parallel Capital Partners. 1.5 million square foot life science portfolio in San Diego.
  • Veralliance (merged with ARE). Various biotech/lab leases, including UCSD Research, Covance, Inc., Sirigen, Inc, Eli Lilly and Biogen Idec (campus lease including office/lab/R&D).
