Alex's wide range of experience in business litigation and class action lawsuits has provided him with opportunities to work on a variety of complex and high-profile cases. One of the more notable cases in which Alex was involved was representing publishing giant Random House in a class action filed against it claiming that embattled cyclist Lance Armstrong's autobiography was falsely advertised as non-fiction. The class action stated that since much of the book's content included fabrications made by the athlete, particularly his involvement with performance enhancing drugs, that it was in fact fiction. Alex and his team successfully dismissed the case on behalf of Random House in September 2013.
"Alex brings with him a depth of experience in a number of commercial litigation matters, including unfair competition class actions, breach of contract, wage-and-hour and a variety of others," says Michael J. Betz, head of Allen Matkins' Jury Trials Practice Group. "Not only has he worked on highly scrutinized cases, including the Lance Armstrong/Random House class action, he also has dedicated his time to compelling and impactful pro bono matters. He is a valued addition to Allen Matkins' already dynamic litigation and trial team."
Most recently, Alex received the “2014 Rock Star” award from the Western Center on Law & Poverty in Los Angeles for his pro bono work. He successfully challenged a local government agency’s application procedures for low-income housing on behalf of Section 8 applicants who were denied due process. The lawsuit forced the agency to change its policies to comport with due process and serves as a model for other Section 8 housing applicants around the country to follow if their constitutional rights are similarly violated.
Alex received his undergraduate degree from Hunter University, City University of New York, his Masters degree in philosophy from the University of Kentucky, and his juris doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. Prior to working for any law firms, Alex was a judicial extern for The Honorable Marvin R. Baxter on The Supreme Court of California, and before that was a law clerk for the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of California. He is a member of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles.
